Women Who Werk: Margaret McGriff

January 12, 2012 | by Fajr | Women Who Werk | 4 Comments

Who are you? Your Age? From?

My name is Margaret  McGriff (aka MJ in blog land!). I’m 30 years old, and a native New Yorker living in South Florida.

What do you do?

I do a lot of things besides the full time day job..  I have my own beauty and fashion blog and I do TV and movie reviews for Visual Adjectives. I’m an author, working on my first novel Damaris with Visual Adjectives as well.  They are a small press publishing company of which I’m also a business partner.  I’m also expanding my freelance writing services and making it an official business.  (Yeah, I don’t know how I sleep either!)

What dreams are you working toward?

One dream of mine is to see my novel published and out there. When I was young girl I dreamed of having a book published and now that I’m in the revision process I’m that much closer to it and it’s really exciting!  Another dream is to be a full time freelance writer and make a career out of my passion.

What motivates you to succeed?

Besides my super supportive husband and family, remembering how I was before I decided to pursue my passion for writing keeps me motivated.  Despite all the stress, setbacks, and extra time I have to put into my projects I am the happiest I’ve been in my entire life.  All I want to do is spread that happiness to others and help them find that sweet spot in their life.

What has been your biggest obstacle?

Me as crazy as it sounds!  I used think it was because of my location, or my educational background (I originally went to school to be an attorney), or my age was the reason why I couldn’t accomplish what I wanted to.  Truth is, those were just excuses and if I believed in myself hard enough that I can do this than I can.   Does it mean I may have to work a little bit harder or go about attaining my goals in a different way?  Sure! But that’s doesn’t make what I want impossible.  So to help keep those self-defeating thoughts at bay, I allow myself a 24 hour pity party (and a little cheesecake) and then I keep it moving!

What advice would you give other women?

You are awesome and it’s not conceited to think you are!  To accomplish anything you want in life you have to have that confidence and belief in yourself to get you through all the tough times you’re going to encounter in your journey.  The path to your goal isn’t going to be smooth and sunny all the time so you need that confidence and swag about you so you can pick yourself up and keep going.  You are in control of your life and don’t let anyone or anything tell you different!
