What I Wore: Festival of Memories

June 13, 2011 | by Fajr | Life of Ms. Thought, What I Wore | 13 Comments

Summer festival season is here! Long stretches of people, eclectic vendors, sound stages and funnel cake! Braving the crowds (and the temperamental weather) you’re always in for a great time. Odunde is an annual African Heritage festival in Philly and it’s one I grew up attending. From a wee kid sleeping under my parent’s vending table to laughing with great friends, dancing in the street and shopping the vendors, summers in the city are a recipe for lasting memories.

Aside from the fun to be had, festivals are all about the cool ensembles that pull double duty: stylish yet wearable for a day in the sun. This romper was a vintage find at Arts, Beats & Eats. Originally it had wide shorts and sleeves and was very matronly. After a visit to the tailor, I had the sleeves removed and the shorts tightened. Viola, an easy one-stop ensemble for a summer of fun!

Here are some photos I took at this year’s Odunde.

What festivities are you attending this summer?

Not sure if it qualifies as a festivity, but will be attending the Bread & Butter tradeshow in Berlin, and will be visiting the city, which is very exciting! I’ve moved to a new part of the world, so I’m yet to discover its festivities.
Love your outfit, supercolourful and the shoes are seriously cute.

I love your outfit! I’ll have to think of getting stuff tailored next time, good idea. This festival seems like such fun: the people, beads, earrings, AND the Red, white and blue shoes! FAB-U-LOUS!

I saw you at Odunde, all three of you ladies actually. Didn’t want to do the creepy hey I read your blog thing LOL. But after carrying my camera around and not taking any pics, this makes me wish I had.

I will be attending the WOL jazz fest this Friday (through Sunday) which Chrisette Michelle will be Friday’s headliner too excited! I will get all of the jewelry that I didn’t scoop up yesterday at Odunde and will be attending pretty much every event in Philly that does not overlap one another…..especially excited about the 4th with The Roots and others also.
