Book Club: The Ineffaceable Kelly Cutrone

October 26, 2010 | by Fajr | Books, Personal Interests | 8 Comments

So per usual I’m tardy to the party and am only now hopping on the Kelly Cutrone bandwagon. I originally encountered her back when I watched the Hills and Whitney left Teen Vogue for People’s Revolution. Her candid and brash demeanor didn’t initally stick with me. But when I saw her on House of Glam, dishing pretty straightforward and solid business advice, something in me perked up and I rushed to Amazon to buy her book “If You have to Cry, Go Outside“

The high-powered publicist is described as a “power bitch” for her sharp and no-nonsense attitude. She’s frank, honest, blunt and wants things done right or not at all. And can you blame her? From reading her book it seems that being true to herself and establishing a strong presence in the industry has been the key to her success. She’s lived an incredible life, complete with drug addiction, homelessness, two divorces and single motherhood and she’s survived and thrived to tell her story.

In a world where women are breed to be docile, Kelly blasts the status quo and busts the stereotypes of what and how a woman should act in business. She’s self-made and has balls by the case load and for that she has a permanent seat at my Masterminds Council and is a feminist icon.

Cutrone-isms: Quotes and Pearls of Wisdom from Kelly Cutrone

“You can fake your way to the table, but ultimately you have to learn how to eat.”

” If u do not have confidence, half a brain and a dollar in nyc — you are basically fucked.” -via twitter

“My grandma used to tell me, “Success is the best revenge.”

“I think the best thing to do is just know that there’s a big difference between style and fashion, and that one doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the other”

“I say that half your life is spent trying to get out of a small town and the other half trying to get back to one.”

“This is an important lesson to remember when you’re having a bad day, a bad month, or a shitty year. Things will change: you won’t feel this way forever. And anyway, sometimes the hardest lessons to learn are the ones your soul needs most.”

“All the seven deadly sins come compliments of this job.”

“If you’re sensitive and somebody hurts your feelings, I don’t give a fuck.”

She’s rich! In her book, she gives tried and true advice on trusting your instincts, deprogramming your expectations and living the life that you want. In a sea of self-improvement, Kelly’s voice cuts through the white noise and is direct and pointed at young women who want to run their own businesses and live a life off the beaten path. It’s a must-read!

I love Kelly … even though I wish she would run a brush through her hair in the morning.

I love Kelly! Maybe it’s cause I know she’s a Scorpio like me, but I just feel like she’s the more assertive/brutally honest version of myself. I think her “tough love” style is awesome (esp. because if you’ve ever watched her get emotional, you’ll realize that she really is very sensitive underneath it all — though she’d probably never admit it). And she is SOO cute to her little girl. What an awesome inspiration she must be to her daughter.

She is an inspiration. Her book really opened my eyes to the amount of work it takes to be successful. I love that while she’s works in fashion, fashion is not her life. Thanks for the comment Erica
