Photo Love: Malick Sidibe

August 4, 2011 | by Fajr | Art School, Personal Interests | 3 Comments

How wonderfully happy does this couple look? Her shoes are off and they are bopping to whatever is on the record player. Her dress coordinates perfectly with his clean suit. It’s a divine scene of old school romance. Don’t you love when photographers capture the essence of a time period or of a group of people?

Malick Sidibe is a Malian photographer who captured the local African culture through the 1960s and 70s.  His images captured the local youth in candid snapshots, hanging out at sporting events, by the beach and often times in his studio. Each photo is enigmatic of the time and transports you to the carefree time of African life; not to mention how dapper everyone looks.

I love these pictures, especially the first shot. You are right, dancing without shoes is definitely the epitome of having a good time, since you are obviouly not looking for an excuse to sit down…
