Music Mantra: Why Every Woman Needs a Theme Song

I’m a firm believer in the power of mantras. Repeated affirmations, vision boards, notes on the mirror and favorable fortune cookie fortunes are strewn around my apartment as a daily reminder of the light and blessings that surround me. While there are so many negative messages around us (and often within us) I truly feel that it is imperative that we cloak ourselves with positive energy by any means necessary.

One way I keep negativity at bay is to listen to my theme song. Remember the scene in “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka” when the band followed Slade down the street? Well, that’s the picture I get in my head when I listen to my theme song.

Whenever I’m having a down day or feeling the “mean reds” listening to Mary J. Blige’s “Just Fine” never fails to lift me up! The upbeat tempo, Mary’s energy and the lyrics about knowing that life is just fine and you wouldn’t change it makes me feel like I can conquer the world!

We all have days where things just don’t seem to be going right or it feels like we’re moving in quick sand. It’s on those days when we need to blast our theme music (At FULL Blast!), dance in our seats and let our music mantras put us in a better state of mind.

Because life is just fine and sometimes you need a song to remind you of that.

What song gets you pumped? What’s your theme song?

Girl yes! We all need a theme song. I’ve had a few depending on what point in my life I was in. When I trying to figure out what I really wanted to do with my career it was Chasing Pavements by Adele and Happy by Leona Lewis. Now to help me stay on the grind my theme songs would have to be Diva by Beyonce and All of the Lights by Kanye West. It’s not so much the lyrics of the songs but rather the swag and attitude behind them that always seem to get me out of a bad mood! :)

I have a whole positive playlist in Spotify which includes: Golden by Jill Scott, It’s a Beautiful Day by India.Arie, Free by Destiny’s Child, Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Beddingfield.

I started off the year with picking out a weekly positive theme song and fell off with it, but plan to implement it again because I think a positive song can also act like an affirmation of sorts.

I love all you ladies theme songs! Mine is by my beloved Jill Scott “The Real Thing”. My favorite part…”I’m more than a toy for your satisfaction, I’m the PayPerView on ya tv screen, ya main attraction. Your phosphorus, I’m your energy, when you’re lost and you need some focus, COME SEE ME!!”

I so agree with you regarding surrounding yourself with positive energy!! We live in such a negative and aggressive world and truly need Herculean coping skills!! I personally listen to Bollywood songs when I am feeling negative as they are not only peppy with great beats but the lyrics usually have an uplifting message!!
