When I was in college my idea of women was that we were made to be strong, independent and defiant. I lived by the Laurel Thatcher Ulrich quote, “Well behaved women seldom make history.” It’s still one of my favorite quotes but as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to understand that women are more than one dimensional “super women.”
We’re more than just mothers, vixens, partners, backbones, heel strutters. We’re dynamic and we can be anything really. What I’ve come to love most about the feminist movement is that it opened the doors for women to choose what makes them comfortable.
Housewife or Corporate Honcho, we’re not just one thing and having and being it all is only as limited as our imagination.
There are times when I need to put on my Superwoman cape and come to a friend’s rescue or when I need to be a warm embrace for a lover. There are times when I need to be a boss and make tough decisions and then there are times when I have to fall in line and follow. And times when I need someone to lend me a hand, ear or hug.
That’s the beauty of women, we’re not just one thing. We multi-dimensional, mirroring facets as varied as a diamond. We can choose to create the worlds of our makings. The ideas of who and what women are only as valid as we make them.
What are your dimensions? What are you made of?
