It’s Monday again yall (doh) and like most other “traditional” employees, I live (LIVE!!!) for my weekends off and with the weather finally breaking, the weekends are the perfect time to get out and see your city. While I typically write or do freelance work on my Sats and Suns, the weekends are the perfect time to cut loose and enjoy the fruits of your labor or as MJ so eloquently put it “Put that 9 to 5 up on the shelf”. Here are some ways (some cool, some corny) to unleash the power of the weekend.
Art Galleries- Libraries- Museums
Most galleries, libraries and museums offer discounts or special events on the weekend, particularly during the day. Grab a friend, a bite to eat and hit your cities art district and local museums, many of which you haven’t frequented since you were a little thang.
Research Restaurants and Dine
Philadelphia has an amazing selection of restaurants from tapas to vegan and everything in between. Additionally, the city periodically does Restaurant Week, offering discount 3-course meals for a week. Sometimes we get into the rut of dining out a the same places, ordering the same dishes. Shake things up this summer and randomly pick a new spot each time you choose to dine out. Before you know it, you’ll have sampled a ton of places and will have new restaurant staples. (Particularly handy when out of town guests want to go somewhere different)
Take a Staycation
Gala Darling wrote a great post on taking a vacation in your own city, so I won’t rehash. Except to say that ”staycations” are perfect when you just want to disappear for a weekend, but don’t want the hassle of actual travel.
Flea Markets- Estate Sales- Yard Sales
I’ve been thrifting since I can remember, my mother a diehard flea market shopper and vendor, so taking a Saturday to rummage sales is second nature. Even if it’s new to you, flea markets, estate sales and yard sales are great places to pass an afternoon and find a hidden treasure you didn’t know you needed. Additionally, if you’re looking to make some extra cash signing up for local flea markets is a perfect way to enjoy the weather and peruse the vendors, while making a quick buck.
Take a Chill Pill
Yes I’m corny and still say chill pill, sue me. Sure the weekends are nice to get out and explore, but sometimes you simply need to recharge and when that happens, take heed. There’s nothing more divine then sitting under the AC on your sofa all day. Trust me.
I’m looking forward to an amazing summer, possibly doing all of these things and then some!

I do that. All of that. =D
Great list. I need to do more of these things. Enrich my weekends and all that good stuff.
@Alicia: I need to get my life together!
