With my birthday 3 days away, I’m taking this time to look back at age milestones in my life and what my 28 year old self would tell my younger selves about life, love and everything else in between. While I fully realize that 28 isn’t old (feels old) and I’m still in the beginning stages of my life, there are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way that my younger selves could benefit from and my current self could stand to remember.
Dear Fajr at 18,
Life is nothing like you think. There will be bumps, curves and unexpected twists & turns that you can’t even anticipate, let alone prepare for.
The picture you have in your head will burst and you will go on a journey of deep soul searching and ridiculously enriching experiences with amazing (and not-so amazing) people!
Your beliefs will be challenged as will your faith, but you will learn what it means to be an individual. Don’t worry so much, enjoy the ride!
Dear Fajr at 21,
College is just the beginning! Majoring in English is by far one of the smartest decisions you’ve made. You will set a precedent for being a strong person that people come to, don’t ever lose that.
You will party like there is no tomorrow, fall in love, get your heart broken and survive it all! You will fall mad, crazy, deep in love with fashion. You will fall even harder for writing.
You will know that life is better lived with great friends and great times! You will be naive but life will whip you into shape!
Dear Fajr at 24,
Work is a four-letter word. Your first job out of college will make you miserable, but you will get out of it. Starting Stylish Thought will shape your life for years to come, always remember the passion you first had.
Not going to London will be one of your biggest regrets & biggest lessons. Don’t worry about the future, bigger things are on the horizon. Meet lots of men, date and have a good time!
You will go through some traumatic experiences but trust me they are not in vein. You will find true friendship with your CORE, and with God they will bring you through it all.
Dear Fajr at 27,
You are a passionate person and will stop at nothing to achieve your dreams. You are stronger than even you believe and that strength will be put to the test. Don’t fret my pet!
You and hard work will become strange bedfellows, but you could stand to say “NO” more. You are a silly goose and you need your friends as much as they need you.
You will learn that digital is your driving force, writing is your wife, fashion is your mistress & the universe is conspiring to bring all those things to you. Be patient, good things come to those who wait. Don’t sweat the small stuff and everything is small!
While life has been nothing like I expected, it has been rich, hilarious and trying at times. At 28 I can say I am feeling beyond blessed and ready for the next 28 years!

I love this post! Isn’t it amazing to look back and see how far you’ve grown and the lessons you have learned that you never knew you would have needed? Growth is a powerful thing. Happy almost birthday…birthdays make me smile!
That´s life, living and learning, but you are just a baby, and so much in front of you…

Oh Fajr, I absolutely LOVE this! Thanks for sharing some of your almighty wisdom.
I’d tell myself to stop fretting and to no matter what, concentrate on having a flipping good time. Life is so short and so precious, yet we always seem to realise that when it’s too late! ♥
Well hello fellow Virgo!
I’m about to hit the big 3-0 in about two weeks and I know I’ve been doing a lot of reflection and introspection. I love how you wrote those little letters to your former self!
If I had to say anything to my former self it would be to stop living the life other people think you should have. I would’ve told myself to stop, listen to my heart, and have the courage to pursue that dream you’ve always had.
Love this post girl!
Hey Fajr,
It was a pleasure meeting you last week!
I would tell my younger self to follow your dreams and stop letting people without dreams hold you back. There is so much waiting for you!!!!
But as they say “It’s never too late!” I’m 33 and the sky is the limit!!!!
Stay Blessed
Wow, I think I’m going to cry…my letters might just be similar. Life has definitely been surprising. I mean, I’m still not over the fact that you’re showing skin!
Happy Birthday, fellow Virgo! I am loving your life lessons! My birthday is exactly one week away and I’ve been reflecting on things that I like, don’t like and want to change about myself. I agree that often life is nothing like you expect it to be, but at the end of the day, it’s wonderful to be here and alive and well!
This is really a great post. It made me teary eyed remembering my childhood days.
