Retro Rabble Rouser-Divine Lady of Light: 2011 Style Direction

January 3, 2011 | by Fajr | Fashion, Personal Style | 9 Comments

Lately I have been thinking about my style and the direction I would like to take it in. While I hate those futile test in defining ones style, I think as of late my style can be characterized as “vintage comfort”. I’ve been converted to the Church of Stretchy Pants, large blouses and vintage sweaters have become staples, flats have been my footwear du jour and frocks have been minimal. My style in 2010 didn’t quite live up to my expectations and my style resolution for 2011 is to DRESS OUTSIDE OF THE BOX!

I’ve been pigeonholing myself into a comfort zone that doesn’t reflect what I love about fashion; the ability to be whoever you want to be. I’ve deemed two sides of my style personality and plan to take them to the next level. Meet “Retro Rabble Rouser” and “Divine Lady of Light”: my 2011 Style Direction.

Retro Rabble Rouser

Retro Rabbelrousing

No surprise here, but I adore 40s and 50s silhouettes, but instead of going the literal route, in 2011 I would love to up the ante with diverse prints and bold color to mix up the classic look. Retro Rabble Rousing is all about taking the retro/vintage look and turning it on its head. This look is probably closest to my personality: bold, in your face, fun and full of old spirit.

Here are the ingredients to add a little Retro Rabble Rousing to your wardrobe:

  • More vintage frocks
  • Form fitting pencil skirts with equally fitted blazers
  • High waisted everything
  • Vintage necktie blouses
  • Heels for breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Bows and turbans are a mainstay
  • Polka dots are a retro rabbelrousing girl’s best friend.

Divine Lady of Light

While Retro Rabble Rousing is all about harking to the past and being bold and in your face, Divine Lady of Light represents my softer side. The side that enjoys moonlight walks, romantic comedies and inner peace.  I’ve always loved the beauty in a neutral color palette and Black Swan probably solidified my need for more blush pinks. Divine Lady of Light is ethereal and delicate with small accents to show that she is still a lady after all.

Want to reveal your softer side?

  • A color palette of blush pinks, grays and whites
  • Accents of leopard, fur and pinks to set of the lightheartedness
  • Gold is De rigueur
  • Ease and comfort are essential, but with a pulled together shape
  • A hat and gloves make all the difference

Are you more Retro Rabble Rouser or Divine Lady of Light? What is your style direction for 2011?
