Be Hue-tiful: Discovering and Owning your Power Color

September 27, 2011 | by Fajr | Fashion, Personal Style | 12 Comments

If there is one thing I love about fashion and personal style it’s expressing my mood through my clothing. What better way to exude your pensiveness/strength/quirkiness or crazy mood for the day than leveraging color. As visual and sensory beings, certain colors evoke certain moods and wearing a bold red frock makes us feel very different than wearing sunshine yellow.

While fashion magazines would tell you to go with shades that complement your undertones or highlight your warm or cool shades, I’m going to tell you to forget all of that rhetoric! Finding your power color is less about skin tone as it is about how you feel when you wear it. Do you feel invincible, sexy, powerful when you wear a certain color? Then I’d say that’s the color for you.

Here are a few common colors and the feelings associated with them:

Red

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing. It is also the color of love. Red clothing gets noticed and makes the wearer appear heavier. Red evokes passion and is often associated with rage!

Blue

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors. It causes the opposite reaction as red. Peaceful, tranquil. Blue can also be cold and depressing. Blue signifies loyalty and honesty.

Yellow

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter.Yellow enhances concentration and is pure, bright and sunny. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy.

Green

Green symbolizes nature. It is a calming, refreshing color. Dark green is masculine, conservative, and implies wealth. Green is nurturing and brings thoughts of growth.

Brown

Solid, reliable brown is the color of earth and is abundant in nature. Light brown implies genuineness while dark brown is similar to wood or leather. Shades of brown create a warm, comfortable feeling of wholesomeness, naturalness and dependability

Black

Black is the most misunderstood color. In a positive state, black is seen as a restful emptiness into which anything may emerge. It is mysterious, providing a sense of potential and possibility. Black is dark and pensive.

White

White is the color of purity. It stands for wholeness and completion. In many cultures it represents openness and truth. White has a cold quality. It can provide clarity as its energy is complete.

Color says so much and reflects our inner moods. For me, I feel most powerful when I’m wearing red!

I’d love to know what color makes you feel powerful!

I always thought of pink as my favourite colour, but I am discovering blue lately.

I feel like it’s yellow. I don’t wear it often because I can barely ever find nice, non-tacky clothes that are yellow.

I will admit to feeling “invincible, sexy, powerful” when I wear red or black. BUT I feel like myself – I feel comfortable – when I wear sea green. How weird is that?

GREAT post! I love black as my power color since I associate it with sleek elegance. I’ve heard that I look good in green though. It goes well with my hair color. :)
