What your Nail Polish Color Says about You

August 4, 2010 | by Fajr Muhammad | Beauty, Makeup Counter | 32 Comments

“You got your toes done up with ya finger nails matching”- Kid Sister

Salons across the world are stocking up with the latest trends in nail color; last year was dark hues: black, cranberry. This summer we’re tickled with mint green, neon or white. So why all the fuss over a chemical paint that chips in a week? Because it defines you! Duh! Choosing a color takes precedence over actually painting your nails. Nail color is the new mood ring and Big Apple red sends a very different signal than Beyonce blue; and there’s nothing worse than mixed signals.

Paper Magazine

Here’s a Myers- Briggs* personality assessment to help you identify if you’re a Chanel Black Satin or a Essie Mint Chocolate Chip and what that means in real people speak.

*This actually has nothing to do with Myers-Briggs or Carl Jung, just wanted to reference them so you’d take this seriously*

Red

You’re sultry, devilish with a retro flair. You love victory rolls, platform shoes and cancer sticks. You wouldn’t be caught dead in anything not form-fitting and you typically have a red lip to match. You are woman, hear you roar!

Pink

Sugar and spice and everything nice. Femininity is your middle name or maybe its just Rose. Either way you love to be polished and pulled together. Secretly you wish you could be a red, but you don’t have the balls!

Bright Blue

Indie girls unite! Bright blue or mint green or any trendy blue is like reverse psychology. It’s indie but all the mainstream girls are wearing it so you wear it to be ironic. Get it?

White

You refuse to be defined and are a blank canvas for the universe to paint its colors. Truth be told, you’re indecisive and a commitment-phobe who makes herself believe white is chic because “it goes with everything.”

Fool’s Gold

Black

Two distinct camps love black nail polish; rocker guys who paint their middle nail to flip off the establishment and fashion girls who want to appear edgy and in style. You can decide which group you fit in.

The Neons

You’re hip and you think outside of the box and you probably take hits of E while dancing the night away in a PBR drenched club. You love plastic bracelets and only wear neon because it’s the color you shoplifted from UO.

Minx

Sticker nail polish, really? You are a horrible person who sucks the fun out of life. You want all the convenience without the hard work and by hard work I mean the pain of chipping polish and touch-ups. Secretly you are an evil genius.

In all seriousness (see note above)  nail polish is an inexpensive way to add some color and fun to your fashion staples. It doesn’t say much about you except, “I like pretty nails”.

What nail polish color do you typically wear?  (and don’t cheat and say clear)

I usually wear pinks or a tan OPI called sand in my suit…And i think this hit it right on the nose. I do consider my self feminine… witty, pretty, girly, worldly one who likes to party but comes home early..lol

I’m addicted to nail polish. I can not pass a cosmetics store without getting a new polish (assuming that they have a nice selection)
I don’t have a favourite colour and I never wear the same colour twice in a row. I do prefer unusual shades though, like blue, silver, orange, green and hot pink.

    Hey Fajr,

At first my mouth dropped open when I found your site. It stayed that way for a while.(If you visit my site, you’ll see what I mean.)

Then I thought, hey, more power to us! It’s obvious that we’re both passionate about style & original thinking, not to mention writing. I think it’s neat that you’ve got a degree in English & I’m working on one in design. We should be friends :)

    Cheers,
    Tessa

P.S. I’m rocking emerald green polish right now!

Hm…I usually wear really, really deep purple/brown shade during the Fall. During the summer, I’m bare and I don’t bother much with polish, but in the Fall/Winter? Oh yes, I wait until after my birthday (Sept 3rd) and go on until Feb. It’s weird, I know, but I love that color during the colder seasons.

I’m the same way. In the summer I wear white mostly or light colors, but in the winter I’m a red fanatic!

:) I was doing the most common colors, but my crystal ball tells me that purple wearers are regal, womanly and serene and just a lil bat crazy! :)

I wear all nail polish colors! Although there is one they missed – gray – and it is notoriously hard to find. In fact, I don’t think I have ever found the shade I want. I want a light to medium gray, like the color the girl wore in Soylent Green. Not white, not black, not silver, but gray.

Cymbelline, Chinchilly is a great gray by Essie. It’s matte and not a hint of silver!

well what about the neutral colors. I use to wear white but now I wear a light brown or beige. Maybe even a very light pearl… So what do you have to say about that.

Makeda, I have to consult the experts at Meyers-Briggs but I think light pearl and neutral means you like to play it safe and you wear granny panties! :) Thanks for the comment!

I love nail varnish (I’m always wearing some) and I seem to alternate between a Two-Tone blue colour (In one light it’s midnight blue, and in the other it’s an intense purple), blood red or a pale silver (Which I’m wearing at the moment)

But I hate the Opi nail varnish, it’s overpriced, watery and chips easily – I’ve found that the makes that don’t chip are Superdrugs own (Where you can get 3 for £5 – This is where I got my two-tone varnish) or Nailfinity (Which has beautiful shades, my red one is from there)

By the way, I enjoyed reading this webpage – it’s great fun to find out that our mood at the moment can influence what colours we paint our nails! :)

I wear dark red/reddish brown. I also only ever wear dark red lipstick. I could never wear the bright stuff.
So, given this list is pretty cool, what do you think it might say?
