Welcome Stylish Thought & Friends! This is a great guest post from the lovely Retro Natural! She blogs about vintage style and shoots phenomenal videos on how to create retro hairstyles on natural hair! Pop over and say hi!
I’ve loved this photo of Coretta since laying eyes upon it. I finally got around to figuring out how to do a look inspired by it. I set my hair in Flexi-rod rollers and to become a bit more familiar with how I put them in, click to see a video about this method of setting your hair. I used Bio Infusion Detangling Conditioner (mixed with a little water to make a leave in conditioner) and pure Shea butter to keep my hair moisturized.
Here are the steps for taking out the rollers:
Step 1
Remove all front rollers and gently tease (you may or may not have to) so that there are no parts or gaps showing.
Step 2
Roll the section of hair under (towards your nose) creating a low hanging, large faux bang and secure with bobby pins. This should sit off to the side a bit but of course, you should always make it your own! (My photo showing this step came out blurry – way to go Retro for not checking all your photos!)
Step 3
Take out the remaining rollers and brush your hair back (to get rid of any parts or gaps) and secure with bobby pins. If your hair isn’t as poofy, you may not need pins. (I know my hair’s fully taken down in the previous step but that’s due to my photo malfunction)
Step 4
Do a mirror check and make sure everything is looking nice from the back. You can (optional) add a hair flower, rhinestone clip…try on a buncha hair baubles. This style is pretty simplistic so if you wanna jazz things up a bit, have at it and enjoy!
Step 5
Take a black and white (or sepia toned!) photo a la Mrs. Scott-King and tack that up for future inspiration.
This is the method I use for most of my styles. The only difference in this set is that the front flexi rods are falling down over my eyes as opposed to falling off to the side. You can definitely come up with various styles pretty easily. Hope you give it a try!
