The Hair Idol Experience

30 Mar

hair-idol
As I much as I love and adore fashion, I am equally obsessed with hair and hairstyles. I recounted my hair-evolution and it seems a hairstyle can’t tie me down. I’ve recently (in the past year) been addicted to hair weaves, both as protective styling and convenience. So in this dire “R” world, the do-it-yourselfer in me, decided to chuck the salon and stylist and attempt to learn how to apply extensions.

Meet Sidnee! Everyone say hello! The newest addition to the Stylish Thought clan. Me and my gurl (mannequin head) are going to learn the techniques and try some new hairstyles on for size. This should be interesting.

This past weekend I did my first sew-in and after much trial & error, and stabbing myself with the needle (thank goodness for your plastic scalp Sidnee) I think I’m getting the hang of it. Eventually I’d love to do a HUGE CURLY FRO… a la these… (Oh luscious curls to drool over)  While my natural hair can achieve this it lacks the length, which explains my fondness for extensions.

What I Wore: M.I.A.

No, I haven’t gone blog AWOL or pulling a Stylebytes (credited to The Coveted) but I have been taking a break and cooking up some things for the blog in the future and working on projects. The lack of WIW posts isn’t because I haven’t been dressing, just that my camera batteries continue to die at the most inopportune times.

But alas, here I am in a repeat ensemble. The weather is very strange at the moment with what I call “faux-sunshine”. Look out the window and it’s beautifully sunny, but step outside and the wind chill is severe. So dressing has been a task, to say the least. My bones are aching for SPRING but poor Mother Nature isn’t ready to bring him out yet.

Shirt & Cardigan: H&M
Skirt: F21
Tights: Target
Boots: Aldo
Necklace: Paraphernalia

Local Love: Shopping

20 Mar

While I love the “major” stores, Philadelphia is chocked full of smaller, independent boutiques that house amazing wears and accessories. And to top it off the staffs are truly helpful. They’re are few shopping events going on in the Philadelphia area (if you’re close) so show some 215 Love.

Topstitch Boutique is moving and having a massive blow-out party and sale. Hit them up for the best in the city vintage, shoes and accessories.

Another amazing vintage spot is Vintage Connection. Tonight from 5-8pm they’re hosing a Teaspoons and Petal event. Celebrate spring while sipping on tea, nibbling sweet cupcakes, and shopping! Enjoy 20% off spring vintage and view the new collection of haiku teacups to hit the store.

Hit these sales and please score amazing pieces, because I’m on the dreaded “B-word”
And if you’re local, please check out the new updated Philly Page. I’ll be posting events, sales and in the future shopping guides.

Vacationing in Style

17 Mar

Working 10 hour days, sitting at a cubicle, staring at a computer screen, my mental state is slowly dwindling and a vacation is sorely in order. Alas, my travel plans won’t kick in until May, when the gurls and I will be traipsing around Miami hopefully looking something like this.

This editorial from Harper’s Bazaar UK April 2009 has me in the mood to bath in UV rays, stay in a florescent deco hotel and dress as ferociously as this model.

I’m craving the body con dresses, cut outs, stacked bangles and treacherous heels to fill in the spaces when I’m not swimming in the ocean.
Are you dreaming of a vacation?

Obessions Du Jour

I have an obsessive personality. When I love something I really love it and naturally I want to share my obsessions with you.

Needless to say, I love the gays. they are fabulous and here are just a few instances that I’m obsessed with at the moment.

1. This video, I initially saw on Parlour Magazine is a fierce tranny mess and I mean that in the best possible way. This group of dancers is amazing, plus they’re dancing to one of my fav tracks of the moment. I’ll be dancing in the mirror trying to learn these dance moves.

2. Holy Smokes Batman! I have an undying love of Drag Queens and Rupaul is the Queen MOTHER! This is by far the best show on television complete with ridiculously hilarious challenges, love to hate characters and a “Lip-Sync for you Life” duel!

I’m rooting for either Bebe Zahara Benet or Nina Flowers. Yes, these ‘itches are fabulous.

3. If you don’t know who B.Scott is well you better ask somebody. He’s the dynamic, splendiforous personality at Lovebscott.com. This is my new anthem and wake-up music. Check out his webisodes on youtube, trust me you’ll love him as much as I do.

What are you currently obsessing over?

Market to Market: Market Publique Opens

12 Mar

Here at Stylish Thought, vintage comes second to none. Gently loved, one-of pieces practically overrun my closet and the most fashionable women the world over all understand the power of vintage. So it is always a real treat to find new vintage sellers and avenues to discover terrific vintage pieces.

market

Market Publique is one such place on the internet where you can find vintage fur coats, plaid dresses and great vintage accessories all in one stop. A marketplace dedicated solely to vintage fashion, Publique is a haven for sellers and buyers alike. Here are a few things I’m eyeing.
